New Documentary About Legendary Death Penalty Lawyer to Premier in Chicago on April 9th

In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling to ban the execution of juveniles, a new documentary chronicles the life and work of one of the nation’s leading critics of capital punishment, Stephen Bright.

Through his non-profit law firm, the Southern Center for Human Rights (www.schr.org), Bright exclusively represents death row cases and prison litigation in the South.  Bright has helped shape state and federallaws that govern death penalty litigation over a legendary 30-year career.  In that time, he has successfully argued a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, testified numerous times before Congress, and has never accepted a client who could afford to pay him.

The new documentary film Fighting for Life in the Death-Belt follows Bright during harrowing final days and hours, as he desperately fights to spare two clients from execution. With time running out, Bright races across Georgia, using every legal means at his disposal, and along the way presents compelling arguments against the criminal justice system that seeks to end his clients’ lives.

Narrated by famed singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco, the 52 minute documentary Fighting for Life in the Death-Belt will premiere on April 9th at the Chicago International Documentary Festival.  Following the screening, Stephen Bright, former Illinois Governor George Ryan, and the first-time filmmakers Jeff Marks and Adam Elend will participate in a Q&A forum open to the media.
